Visita al CFRN de Canadá

Llevo seis horas levantando nasas y empiezo a estar realmente cansado. Tengo los brazos agarrotados y me tengo que mirar las piernas para asegurarme de que todavía siguen ahí abajo. ¡Y aún quedan otras seis horas de pesca! Heidi, la marinera que todos los días realiza este duro trabajo a bordo del langostero patroneado por Jimmy está entretenida en colocar gomas en las pinzas de los bogavantes para evitar que se lastimen entre sí.

Subo la nasa donde se debaten cinco hermosos bogavantes. Los retiramos con cuidado de no perder un dedo en sus pinzas y los medimos. Dos de ellos no tienen el tamaño mínimo y son inmediatamente devueltos al mar. Cebamos la nasa y, a la orden de Jimmy, la fondeamos otra vez.

Taller sobre la talla de madurez de las navajas en Aguiño

El pasado 18 de mayo de 2013 en el marco del proyecto GAP2 celebramos en la Cofradía de Aguiño un taller práctico para establecer la talla de madurez de las navajas. El taller fue impartido por Alba Hernández del Dpto. de Ecoloxía e Bioloxía Animal de la Universidade de Vigo y asistieron las Asistencias Técnicas de las Cofradías de Aguiño y Cambados y un servidor (leer más aquí).

MAIA Workshop: “Tools for MPA Governance: Management Plans”

Hoy está teniendo lugar la primera jornada del taller de ‘Herramientas para la governanza de las AMPs: Planes de Gestión’ dentro del proyecto europeo MAIA. Abstract:

The Marine Reserve of Fishing Interest (RMIP) “Ría de Cedeira”, implemented in 2009, comprises the internal waters of the Ría Cedeira. Within the scope of the marine reserve are three areas with different degrees of protection, a reserve, two areas of special protection, and an area marina. This study characterizes the distribution and abundance of fish in different areas of protection in order to monitor the possible effect that the degree of protection exerted on them.

Using a BACI-type design (before-after-control-impact) are established, depending on their degree of protection, 6 sampling stations. Seasonally, from 2008 to 2010, we determined the abundance of species through visual census conducted by scuba divers along fixed transects of 100m in length.

We analyzed the spatial and temporal differences in fish communities at different levels of protection, type of substrate and time of year, through nonparametric multivariate techniques, using the statistical package PRIMER v.6 (Clarke & Warwick, 2001). Furthermore, accumulation curves were made using the ESTIMATES program (Colwell, 2009) to determine species richness in each of the study areas.

Defensa de la tesis de Pablo Pita (streaming y presentación)

Mañana jueves 14 de Julio a las 11 h se realizará la defensa publica de la tesis de doctorado de Pablo Pita titulada “Comunidades de peces de los arrecifes rocosos costeros de Galicia: ecología e impactos humanos” en el Salón de Actos de la Facultad de Ciencias de la Universidad de A Coruña.

Haremos streaming en directo en el canal del grupo de investigación. La presentació que Pablo utilizará está disponible en Prezi.

World Small-Scale Fisheries Congress – Bangkok, Thailand – October, 18-22, 2010.

Last month, Inés Naya had the opportunity of going to Thailand to the World Small-Scale Fisheries Congress (WSFC) celebrated in Bangkok in October, 18-22, 2010.

The congress was really social-oriented and during four days topics such as poverty alleviation, fishing rights, wellbeing, fisher’s livelihood, resilience, agency, gender issues, management and governance, community-based management, bycatch among many others were discussed.

Our contribution to the congress were two presentations on the topic of bringing scientific provision at the local level with the help of ‘barefoot ecologists’ and the like, and in the particular case of the technical assistants in Galicia.
