Abstract:

The Marine Reserve of Fishing Interest (RMIP) “Ría de Cedeira”, implemented in 2009, comprises the internal waters of the Ría Cedeira. Within the scope of the marine reserve are three areas with different degrees of protection, a reserve, two areas of special protection, and an area marina. This study characterizes the distribution and abundance of fish in different areas of protection in order to monitor the possible effect that the degree of protection exerted on them.

Using a BACI-type design (before-after-control-impact) are established, depending on their degree of protection, 6 sampling stations. Seasonally, from 2008 to 2010, we determined the abundance of species through visual census conducted by scuba divers along fixed transects of 100m in length.

We analyzed the spatial and temporal differences in fish communities at different levels of protection, type of substrate and time of year, through nonparametric multivariate techniques, using the statistical package PRIMER v.6 (Clarke & Warwick, 2001). Furthermore, accumulation curves were made using the ESTIMATES program (Colwell, 2009) to determine species richness in each of the study areas.

World Small-Scale Fisheries Congress – Bangkok, Thailand – October, 18-22, 2010.

Last month, Inés Naya had the opportunity of going to Thailand to the World Small-Scale Fisheries Congress (WSFC) celebrated in Bangkok in October, 18-22, 2010.

The congress was really social-oriented and during four days topics such as poverty alleviation, fishing rights, wellbeing, fisher’s livelihood, resilience, agency, gender issues, management and governance, community-based management, bycatch among many others were discussed.

Our contribution to the congress were two presentations on the topic of bringing scientific provision at the local level with the help of ‘barefoot ecologists’ and the like, and in the particular case of the technical assistants in Galicia.

ASLO Aquatic Science meeting (23-30 January 2009)

La ultima semana de enero (del 23 al 30) tuvo lugar el ASLO Aquatic Science meeting en Niza (Francia).  Un miembro del grupo, Maria Jose Juan Jorda, presentó un trabajo donde se cuantifica como responden los escombridos a la explotación pesquera usando modelos jerárquicos. Este proyecto se desarrolla dentro del marco del proyecto METAOCEANS . Os dejamos aquí la versión pdf de la charla.

Since the 1950s Scombrids have been subject to large removals of biomass in their populations. The impacts of fisheries on tuna species have been a hot debate in the last few years giving rise to widely different views on the present status of large predatory tunas. This family is comprised of 48 species distributed throughout the world oceans which have developed diverse life history strategies and therefore can be expected to respond differently to fisheries exploitation. This study characterizes and quantifies the responses of Scombridae species to fishing exploitation on a global scale. We have attempted to compile all fisheries data sets worldwide, including catches, size composition and biomass estimates. Biomass trends and changes in size structure were estimated using both traditional and Bayesian hierarchical models. These methods combine different sources of information and consider the hierarchical nature of the data. The understanding of how “data rich” species respond to exploitation can help with a priory predictions of responses of related stocks with similar life history traits and lacking the proper data to be well managed.

En esta jornada tendréis la oportunidad de escuchar a Raúl Mario Malvino Madrid, ingeniero de alimentos con amplia experiencia en acuicultura y pesca que actualmente trabaja en LABOMAR de la Universidade Federal do Ceará y a Sérgio Macedo Gomes de Mattos, superintendente de la Secretaria Especial de Acuicultura y Pesca en Pernambuco y experto en elasmobranquios con mucha experiencia en la gestión de pesquerías.

(Lobo) Orensanz, investigador del Centro Nacional Patagónico en Argentina y Profesor de la School of Fisheries en la Universidad de Washington en Seattle, y Jeremy Prince, consultor independiente y Profesor Asociado de la Murdoch University en Australia.
